for temperate climates like n europe and north america, I'd take a combined (cheap) can opener, bottle opener, corkscrew. These days its harder to get a way with this sort of stuff, but if I coukld I also take a wire saw. this way you can open your booze, open a can of sardines and cut a bit of wood for a camp fire while you down your beers and scoff your sardines and bread, hopefully to a nice view. For a hot and especially humid climate I take a small bottle of iodine. 3 drops to a litre of water, wait 30 mins. Cap the container. water is now sterilised. Also on cuts and rashes if you wipe them, or pour the iodine onto the affected area it will clean up the wound and help it heal. It works a treat where plasters fall off with humidity. Rehealed a great big saddle cut across my errr. Anyway it closed up a very painful gash. And its dirt cheap. I am not offering this advice as a doctor though, just something thats worked for me and others I sloshed the stuff on.

With two small children even a trip to the supermarket feels like a major treck. But one thing I always carry is a pack of baby wipes - they get most stuff off most things, are useful for circumstances where water isn't readily available for washing and are light enough to stuff in a bag without noticing.

Passport, credit cards, cash, toothbrush and toothpaste. Rest depends on how long the trip is but I usually end up packing too much.

My digital camera and memory cards. Then I have to bring my laptop to upload the photos each night in order to reuse the memory cards. I take so many photos.
I also take my iPod shuffle for the plane ride. Eight hours on the plane will drive me insane.

Working away for long stints, I always take photos of my wife and boy, the next thing in my case is a jumbo box of Glengettie tea-bags. All set for another three months in hell.
