I lance them with a sewing needle, and squeeze out the juice, as soon as I recognize them. This helps to purge the virus laden fluid before it has a chance to infect other nearby cells.
Be sure not to get any of this fluid in your eye, or anything like that. Wash your hand thoroughly afterwards.
You could get a prescription for acyclovir. (It helps shorten the duration of the outbreak.)
I also get some quick-healing effect from an 'over the counter' ointment called "abreva".
It's pricy, but it works, you only use a little at a time, and it thus lasts a long time.
I find that not letting myself get dehydrated helps to prevent outbreaks.

I take Brewer's yeast tablets...about 5 twice a day. I'm told the B vitamins in it help. If you're in Europe, there's some great stuff you can get at any pharmacy without a prescription. In the US, your best bet is a prescription ointment from a doctor.
