People do eat squirrels. They are quite delicious, but not easy to kill and clean. They are not a government regulated meat product, as opposed to beef, chick, turkey, etc, so squirrel meat cannot be sold in stores. Don't let the other answers fool you; it is not just people from Louisiana who eat squirrel. People in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, and other midwestern states enjoy a little squirrel meat too.

Well, squirrels are part of the rodent family, but I was raised on in a very rural area and we did eat squirrel potpie (and rabbit stew). When finances are lacking, you learn to live live off the land. We often had fresh caught fish (rainbow and brown trout) and we raised pigs for butchering. This was not Appalachia or the Ozarks, but minutes from Penn State University. Small family farms were not always profitable.

Squirrels are edible and actually quite tasty. There is very little meat on them and the process of skinning them is not worth it for many people to bother with. The cost of mass processing is too high to consider making them an everyday treat in the grocery store.

well i have an idea for you if you can get your hands on some milk and eggs as well. line a lasagna pan with the bread, cook the sausage and crumble it over the bread. mix up about 10-12 eggs with about a half cup of milk, pour that over the bread. sprinkle with the cheese and bake. as for the grease and syrup, you're on your own with that. or, maybe you can put some cheese on each piece of bread and then roll a sausage in it and secure with a toothpick and bake until done. (kind of a pigs in a blanket thing) and then you could dip it in the syrup.

ZIPLOC OMELETTE

(This works great !!! Good for when all your family is together. The best part is that no one has to wait for their special omelet !!!)
Have guests write their name on a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag with permanent marker.
Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (not more than 2)
shake to combine them.
Put out a variety of ingredients such as: cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.
Each guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and
shake.
Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up.
Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes.
You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water.
Open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared for
everyone to be amazed.
Nice to serve with fresh fruit and coffee cake; everyone gets
involved in the process and a great conversation piece.
Imagine having these ready the night before, and putting the bag in boiling water while you get ready. And in 13 minutes, you got a nice omelet for a quick breakfast!!!

Fry the sausage and drain it. Place it on a slice of bread with the cheese. Fry the sandwich in the skillet until golden brown on each side and the cheese is melted. Serve with syrup to dunk the sandwich into.
