Well if we assume that both sides stay conventional (no nukes, chem, or bio) then we are left the following considerations.
The United States is the only country in the world capible of projecting overwhelming force any great distance from its own borders. We can do this because we basicly own the ocean thanks to the US Navy and its Carriers and Submarines and we own the sky (for now) thanks to US Air Force. All that said I doubt seriously we could physically invade the PRC due to its sheer size and population and the fact that the current insurgency in iraq has demonstrated how to beat the US in a war by dragging it out in a bloody fashion (or let the liberals undermine the military for you :o).
So in the long run alot of people, especially in china, would die, and both governments would suffer at home as a result of the debacle but I don't think either side could actually win (ie take over the other one). In fact, I don't think we will be seeing another great power war anytime soon.

There will be no winners if the war turns out to be nuclear, and it could happen as both countries are capable of and moreover, may not hesitate to use it first.
If its just air attacks, and naval attacks, USA is definitely be in an advantageous position, even though China also has lot of high end weapon systems.
However, if the war is more direct with conventional weapons, on the ground, US will have a tough time when they occupy the territory. You know what is happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. The same was the case in Vietnam.
The US forces are known to shoot from a long distance, many a times hitting wrong targets!

A war between two super-powers is unlikely because of the results. China is not war-mongering. They will follow in the steps of the Japanese and dominate with global economic success. Some press reports say that the Chinese army is being beefed up, but in actuality it is mainly used to absorb some of the over-abundant work force. Soldiers are provided with food, shelter and clothing and while it is not a good paying job, they are kept busy, sometimes even sweeping streets. In China there are limited places in universities and average students have little chance to better themselves and the factories have taken on the workers they need, some stores have more clerks than customers to use up this inexpensive labor market but there are not enough positions and so the army accepts the overflow. To western eyes, it looks ominous but it is a method to solve an internal problem. The technology of China is amazingly sophisticated, perhaps not as much as in the US but capable of defending itself against any aggressor. Colonel Yang went into space at a relatively cheap price compared to US launches into space. China is not an isolated country and has ties with technology from many nations. Given that and the work ethics of the Chinese, the US might come out second best. The CIA has stated that within 15 years China will be the world leader in one of their reports. However China isn't interested in world domination, but developing its economy, its people and its education equal to, or better than America. I am an America living and working in China, and when you get to know the people, they have simple goals...the same as you...a good life...a nice home...maybe a car...and a healthy child.

well first of all if there is going to be a war between the two countries i dont know who will win but one thing which i can tell u for sure is that humanity will loose.
the effects of a war between the two countries will be catastrophic.
however in the end the US might emerge as the winner but it will be a war torn country to say the least.
anyways i dont think that this war is ever gonna happen mostly because china is not on a confrontationist attitude anymore.
it is now concentrating on its economic development and increasing the standard of living of its citizens

I have heard it consistantly presented that the Russians would have the upper hand in a full engagement. I tend toward an eventual advantage being served the US side if the exchange is Completely committed to.
If any country, Russia.

China of course.
The Usa has never won a war without European aid, and the EU would nver be stupid enough to take on china - they live next door.

Both countries have allies. China is a communist nation so they may not have as many allies, but that is pure assumption on my part. Neither would war against each other by themselves. It would be WWIII.
