Hey check out animal rescue sites. Don't buy from a Pet Store they are usually puppy mill dogs there!
Check out the Local SPCA- Humane Society in your Area.
If you don't have the time to brush your dog every day or you don't like shedding from a long or short haired dog I suggest a poodle or Bishon Frise.
You also need to look at how much time you have to spend with your dog. Some high engery dogs like Jack Russell's need to be walked twice a day everyday and kept busy. More laid back dogs like to be walked once a day and play in the home.
Mixed Breed dogs need homes too and You can usually get nice little dogs as well. I have Dachshund, Schnauzer, Poodle mix dogs ages 9 and 6 they are great they don't shed and are little dogs. :)
All the best on your research. Here are some links for you.

Go online to www. petfinder.com The have a whole variety of dogs listed by breeds. You put in your zipcode which gives you local prospects. Most of the dogs there are around $200.00. I got a Yorkie from a rescue organization and he's the coolest little dog. He is obedience trained, housebroken and does lots of tricks. He was kicked out of his previous home just because of a new baby. Good luck in your search!

Toy poodles! They're small, intelligent, easy to train, very friendly, love people and don't shed. They have the most gorgeous face and beautifuil coat. I have one and whenever I bring her to a store, many people stop and can't take their eyes off her face. They don't think themselves as dogs, they think themselves as another member of the family. The only disadvantage of having one is the cost of the occasional grooming, but you can learn to do it yourself at home with lessons and right tools. It's very important to get one from a reputable breeder. Don't go to pet stores, or look into the newspaper ads!

Check out a book from the library on toy breeds. (That's the title for small dogs.) Or you could look on line and just look at the different dogs. I found my dog though Craig's List. so that's a good place to check. Or a dog pound.
