Why is it that when a person asks a question about another religion, the members of that other religion automatically go on the defensive and presume that the questioner is a member of the "opposite" religion???

That and they always gotta say something about spiritual "bigotry"*

LOL you guys are comedy

If a question is implying some criticism of a person's religion, it is similar to criticising the person themselves. Not just ordinary criticism either, in criticising a persons beliefs you are criticising their core identity and this is taken seriously.

I try not to be critical of another's religion but sometimes the questions and responses are so stupid that I just can't help myself

I have only observed christains doing that and occasionally muslims and athiests (though I don't consider that a religion). I have yet to see a Buudhist, Hindu or Jew do that unless very specifically provoked. My theory; Christians are sensitive and athiests are used to defending themselved so it becomes automatic.

All religions are afraid of other religions doing harm to them. The more fragile one is more fearful. Some even strives to protect their own religion by killing others.

Those who have solid base will not fear other religions and they don't have to labour hard to protect their own.

The big three, Cristiianity, Judaism, and Islam, tend to do that, most other religions are way way more tolerant

Because most religious people are fanatically intolerant. Some times I think it is just away to hide their doubts about their own beliefs.
