Someone made a great suggestion about going to a bar and trying different types. Many bartenders are more than willing to let you try a beer first - they will give you a sample in a shot glass or something like that. I'd pick a microbrewery, sportsbar or Irish pub and do that. Maybe do a little bar hopping. Try a few samples from each bar before you order a beer. (of course this will only work if the beers are on tap - not bottled.)

There are darker beers which are thicker and more bitter. If I'm in that kind of mood I'd go with a guinness or a boddington.

Then there are your middle of the road beers - not to dark - not too light. I like Rolling Rock, Harps India Pale Ale, Brooklyn Lager or Smithwycks.

If I am in the mood for a real light easy going beer I'll pick a corona.

If you develop a taste for beer and you live near a microbrewery - visit it every once in a while. A lot of them have seasonal beers. Sometimes the beers they make on site are better than what you buy in stores. Plus a lot of them have deals where can purchase a sample a each of them for the price of one beer.

are you looking for something different or one to be a favorite? Find a bar that has various beers on tap besides the macros, that way you can explore a little. If you don't like one you're out a few bucks and not stuck with 3 or more beers you don't like.
I prefer to buy beer I like. The one's I've disliked were a waste of money regardless of how cheap like Old Milwaukee.
