Freiburg is in the heart of the southern Black Forest.
To go up to the mountains for example the Feldberg, which is the highest mountain there (4.500 feet) it takes you about 45 -60 minutes. It is about 30 miles but a steep, curvy road.
To go to the mountains you can also use a train from Freiburg. It brings you directly up there and the ride is truly wonderful.
Here is the website of the train system:
www.bahn.de if you go to international guest you have it in English, too.
Type in Freiburg -Hinterzarten and you see the schedule.
I was born and raises in Freiburg.
Have fun and say "hello" to the Black Forest ;-))

The Black Forest is a hilly, wooded region in southwestern Germany. Freiburg is on the western edge of it, as shown in the map links below.
FYI, Triberg is a typical charming Black Forest village which is quite popular with visitors. It's about an hour or so by car from Freiburg.

Thats true, Triberg is very popular couse there is a really nice small park there where you hike (real easy hike) to the top of the Triberg waterfalls (which I think are the highest in Germany)

once you get there, park right next to the 1000 clocks of the world store (not sure about the name but you cant miss it ) then walk to the entrance of the park (you can brows the store first if you want) :-)
