Yes and no
One is suppose to give 10%, so if you only have a dollar, you should give 10 cents.
On the other hand, I understand what you are saying. Churches are ran by humans, and some of them forget the big picture. When the church thought new carpet was more important than helping the poor. I quit giving my 10% to them.
As I figure it, God doesn't mind who I give it to, as long as I give it.

well there are always improvements to be made in the church. The bigger the church the more of god u see ( yeah heaven is quite far away), isnt that the theory behind all the new crystal megachurches. And oh guess what, having one normal church isnt enough, didnt u know it is always better to make the church as big as possible so people all around the world can see it and worship it from the comforts of their homes.
Hence the large requirements of money
Now as for the money. I always donate directly to the people, no middle man, because they always take a big cut (how much? it is up to them, always up to them, can be like 99%)
The next time you see someone needing help on the street, direct them to a shelter, I guess they are more responsible with the money. Donations to shelters either help fix the shelter or buy food and clothing, so it is very good.

Interpretation might be incorrect. The people to whom you used to donate money are 'used' to receive it from you and look forward to it. It takes a very deep understanding and empathy to share your concerns (financial distress). After all, they are otherwise normal humans, and have taken up a religious work which has certain sanctity. God never needed even our planet, leave alone, the stupid paper currency which has the only value that we 'attribute' to it, and hence valid only amongst us(that too in our respective countries!).

God does not require a never ending supply of money.
Ravening wolves in shepherd's clothing demand never ending supplies of money. Jesus Christ went to the poor and powerless, not the rich and powerful. He commanded
His followers to sell all they have, to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to care for the sick. There are followers of Christ who deny themselfs, pick up their crosses, and follow
His example.

Maybe you should've stopped giving to people who were asking for it, and give to people who are in real need of it. Charity begins at home. And dont feel bad for looking after yourself, since the so-called God-lovers cant help you. These people are probably more infatuated with God himself rather than what he stands for.

God doesn't require money, people do. Interesting question, though. What are your thoughts that you asked the question?
