And what stroke is the best, and why?

i am an advanced swimmer and we do 42 laps at swim practice- all strokes..

i would say to do all strokes but pace yourself.

butterfly is the hardest but shows some of the best results- works greatly on abs and arm musles.

freestyle and backstroke are very good for leg muscles.

i would say to start out with 10 laps.. with a 10 second break between everyone.. do butterfly and freestyle the most, and breast and backstroke as the last 2..

as you get used to the 10 laps, work your way up in increments of 2.

you will see results as long as you eat healthy, and do a little bit of cardio with swimming. seventeen magazines and teen magazines always have good cardio workouts.

i hope that i help! e-mail me anytime

I am on a yearlong swimteam. I am 15 and I do 4500yds (180 laps shortcourse) plus a day.

Ill give you a workout to try....
*If you've never been on a swimteam or been taught the strokes its probably best for you to stick to freestyle and backstroke since they are the easiest to do correctly

Warmup:
-200 yds (8 laps shortcourse) freestyle
*swim at a comfortable pace
-rest for a minute or two

Workout:
-8 x 50 yds (16 laps) freestyle kick with a kickboard with a 15 second rest after each lap
*medium pace
-10 x 50 yds (20 laps) alternate between freestyle and backstroke with a 20 second rest after each lap
*medium pace

Warmdown:
-200 yds (8 laps) backstroke
*comfortable pace

Start out with this and as you feel more comfortable start adding more laps and start doing sets where you sprint and sets where you swim maybe one or two 200 yds (8laps) straight.
You should definitly look into getting on a swim team. Most cities have a "masters team" for adults of all abilities to swim
