Two months ago I went to the eye doctor to get an eye exam. He gave me my presciption (which doesnt expire until April 2007) and I got my glasses. Well I just broke my new glasses and ive decided glasses were too much of a hassle. Now Im just wondering...What is the difference between contact lens exam and an eye exam. According to my knowledge...a contact lens exam is an eye exam PLUS contact fitting. Is this correct?

So if I were to get contacts would I just have to get a contact fitting or would I have to get the whole contact lens exam? Any other suggestions/ or solutions?

it is a contact fitting also.. They measure your actual eyeball. It was different when I did my actual eye exam for my contacts

As said before, the two exams are different but since you just had your comprehensive exam, those parts will not have to be repeated and only tests to determine if you are a good contact lense candidate and then tests determining the parameters of the lenses required for you.
Even with contact lenses it is important to always have a back-up pair of glasses. If you experience any trauma to your eye or develop an eye infection you will need your glasses since you will not be able to wear your contact lenses.

Most doctors will give an eye exam (which checks for diseases and general health of your eyes) before fitting you for contacts.
If you go to the same optometrist who performed the recent exam, then you probably don't have to do another full eye exam.
Once you get fitted and find the desired prescriptions, you can order contacts through your doctor or go elsewhere (i.e.online).

The first time, I recommend that you just get one box from your doctor. He/she will probably give you a trial pair to see how it feels and works for you. If everything feels good, then you can buy more through the different options.

I wear glasses and contacts and have wondered this myself. First of all, it (The contact lens exam) is more expensive. I think it is more comprehensive, as contact wearers need more thorough care to make sure they aren't experiencing any problems with the use of their contacts. Contact lens prescriptions are only good for a year in the state of Florida too, it is a pain.

yeah.. Contact lense exam is a lil' different... and they examine the angle of the curve in your eye so that they get you right fitting contacts... it's stupid I know.. I wear glasses and it pissed me off when the last exam I had wasn't for contacts! >:|

but yeah... there's a small difference... and it's required... =/

You can get contact exams at wal-mart... it's not that expensive

I believe they will measure the shape and size of your eyeball for contacts. and they will not do that in a standard eye exam
