Ask your hotel concierge when you get into town. The nicer hotels can get the best seats at a premium price.

Alternatively, pay cash for "day of" tickets. TKTS sells unsold tickets on the day of performance for all Broadway shows for 25-50% off the box office price plus a $3.00 service charge per ticket. Located in Times Square, it is the best deal in town.

I have bought tickets both ways and was happy both times.

P.S. Try to decide before hand which shows that you want to see and be flexible.
