Is it possible?

Is it possible? I've been riding in sand rails now and they have less horsepower than the old vw bug engines, but they are pull starts with kill switches. I figured this would be great because you take out the battery and lose the starter. Sure, you have to pull start, but its less weight. When you're in the dunes, I just feel like more things could go wrong with a starter, but I'm sure everyone has their own opinion on that. Can a pull start system be crafted? Thanks for everyone's input.

Yes, there used to be aftermarket companys that make pull starts for for vw engines. That said there collectors items today and no long made(nor have been for 30-40 years) so it'll take you some time and money to find one. As well a more common(as in made by vw) would be a crank start, which the crank nuts pop up on ebay all the time for about ($10-20), but never seen the crank for sale(not that a machine shop couldn't make one up) Now all that said if you running a vw tranny why not just hit up the junkyards for a used starter, be cheaper and much easier than tring to kick it over by hand.

Get a bug. Parts are easier to get since a dune buggy will be mostly aftermarket. And a bug is a good choice. Really reliable, parts are still cheap, easy to fix, and you'll have a lot of fun driving it and taking it to shows. There's nothing like a VW show. That second answer is true if you're 6'4 and your bug is 40 years old in every aspect. The interior is actually quite roomy (I often joke that it has more legroom than a 76 Cadillac, because it actually does. I'm 6'0 and I can stretch my legs out flat). They're slow but not THAT slow. You'll keep up. The heaters will work if they're not rusted. This issue never ceases to piss me off. People always say that they don't have heat. That's like saying a car doesn't have an engine because it doesn't run. In reality a properly working heater system blows out very hot heat, some of the hottest I've ever experienced. I've recorded in excess of 100 degrees. That guy probably had a bad experience with one because most people beat the **** out of them and didn't maintain them properly due to their low price. Find a BMW that someone didn't care about for decades and kept running into the ground. Won't be a good car.

Why would you want to make it a pull start when it already starts up well with a key. Put the engine in the buggy and leave the ignition the way it is.

Uh..I'm not an expert but I think without a compression release it's just too large an engine to pull start. You could always push start.

no. You would not be able to pull hard enough to turn the engine over.
