I think you're talking about thalidomide, which caused babies born with flippers for hands.

Thalidomide. I believe that is what you are talking about. It caused severe disibilities in unborn children. It was discontinued around te early to middle 60's I believe. It was being used for awhile as a something in realtion to AIDS. Sorry thats all I can remember at this point.
