I think the main reason is not to bother the laypeople for an evening meal and it helps meditation, reduce obesity (and reduce the suffering of animals and insects involved in producing food) but I think there might be other health reasons?

For some reason which eludes medical science, eating a consistently low calorie diet switches on some unknown mechanism in the human body which 'magically' increases you're longevity... in short, if you starve yourself a little bit all your life you will typically live an unusually long time.

Yes. In Confucius and Buddhism a healthy intestinal track is the secret to long life and good health. Our bodies expend so much energy breaking down food. This process in of-itself is troublesome, but is especially so because when the body uses it's energy to digest, it takes away from maintaining all the other functions. I read one that when one is 'full' the body is putting 90% of its collective energy into digestion. just imagine not eating that much all the time! That means the body can focus all that energy elsewhere being more efficient. The reason they eat before lunch is because it takes that lone for the body to wake up and efficiently digest while at the same time not being that late in the day so not to have food in the stomach for sleep. That's why it is bad to eat too much before bed-bad for the body that it. It needs to focus its sleep energy on resting up, not digesting. Many physicians are starting to embrace eastern notions of eating habits and suggest fasting once a week. I do every Monday and feel great!

they don't - Buddhist clergymen are a real blended bunch - likely some do eat one meal an afternoon. Many eat although they prefer. yet fairly - after your youngster years, you do not choose as a lot nutrition as we get in u.s..... 3 or 4 of 5 food an afternoon and the completed u . s . a . is finished of morbidly overweight human beings.. SuperSize Me!
