I don't know if it's "normal", but it happens. I've had gout for several years now and mine followed very few of the usual rules. The first time I got it was after surgery. My entire foot up to and including the ankle burned, throbbed, hurt like h***. I literally could not keep a sheet on it and had trouble letting the foot dangle over the side of the bed because everyone kept bumping into it. The swelling progressed up my leg and the surgeon suspected a blood clot. The Dopplar test came back negative so he had my blood tested for a high concentration of urea, etc. This was positive and I was immediately put on gout medication.
A few months later I had another attack--only worse because instead of lasting a couple days, it lasted six weeks. Again, the entire foot--top, sides, ankle, arch hurt. I had to use a walker or a wheelchair to get around. I saw my primary care doctor who suspected gout because I was finally displaying the tell-tale sign of cherry redness on the one side. I was sent to a podiatrist who agreed with the diagnosis and ordered more blood work for confirmation. He couldn't understand why it wasn't limited to a joint such as the big toe which is the usual place. X-rays showed I had gout in all the tendons in that foot. My blood level concentrations were so high they were practically off the chart. He said he had never seen such high numbers before. I've had gout several other times, not always the same foot, but usually so, and it's always been in the tendons.
There isn't much you can do for it. There are some medications your doctor can prescribe. Some people tell me drinking cherry juice helps to alleviate the symptoms and they swear it ends it sooner. It didn't work for me, but you may want to give it a try. Keep the foot elevated. Try not to walk because it increases the pain and you're more apt to fall.
