no frieking way!! that is ridiculous. i just got engaged and we spent about $3600, which is not the most expensive but it certainly wasn't the cheapest and it is absolutely gorgeous! i love it and it is more than big enough for a normal person. i don't know what the average is but i have been looking for a long time and noticing other people's rings and none of them have even come close to $40K. i've never understood people's need to buy a tiny piece of jewlery that costs more than my SUV. it just doesn't seem smart. i don't know where you live but you can tell your wife that that is not the average price for an average person. that is an extreme price for an extremely wealthy (or bad money managing) individual.

Whats appropriate about spending so much on a ring? Is that really love or materialistic? I would not want to marry anyone that expected that out of me.... could ya imagine the debt you'll have to pay with her expectations if she thinks thats average? LOL tell her to get a job!!! Its the love that counts, not the money for petes sakes! Why do people feel the need to have the best? Where is the love ? in your wallet?

All I can say is that will be one ugly ring. I personally don't think that huge diamond rings look good on women's hands because they just look so big and clunky. If you pay that much for a small ring you are getting totally ripped off. If you're really rich and your wife has found a nice big ring she likes, go for it...you don't need our permission to spend your own money. However, I think she is probably taking you for a ride as that is a lot of money.

Not unless you make more than a million dollars a year. The average price on an engagement ring is actually $1500. I saw that statistic on Bridezillas.

That is very expensive but if you both like the ring, go for it. The average price most men spend on a ring is $3,000 - my ring cost more then that, but it depends on a lot of things.

That's insane.

I guess if your income is $240,000 and you're spending the traditional "two months salary," then it would be. But most folks who are getting engaged are younger and nowhere near the $200,000 earning mark. I don't think I've ever even seen a $40,000 ring in a store.

Your wife is nuts. Where is she getting her "average" from?

Unless your Billy Zane or some other hollywood celeb that needs to spend that much money on a ring as publicity stunt, then you're spending too much.... and if your future wife thinks that anything less is not good enough..... well, (in my opinion) that's just not a good sign of things to come...

4K is alright, 40K is a bit much. Spend what you feel comfortable with. If you guys are scrounging to get a downpayment on a house, I would spend less. If you have the money and fall in love with a ring, 2-6K go for it.

My fiance and I just purchased a ring for 4K and I love it. It is exactly what I wanted and it was in our budget. Just make sure you do your homework and stay away from mall stores. We got ours at bluenile.com and its perfect and, it appriased for 8K.

It's not average, but if you can afford it, then it's not wrong to spend that much.

For that money, you should go quality all the way. You can get a round 2.25 carat almost perfect diamond for that. We're talking D color, VVS1 or 2, ideal cut, with a platinum setting. Could be fun!

I think that's way too much. You can buy a really nice car for that amount of money. But if you can afford it, then it's your choice. Don't go into years of a debt for it, though. That would be silly. What does she expect to spend on the wedding? A million dollars? You got yourself a big spender.
