Timing was bad. '58 was a recession year, and a down year for the auto industry.
Marketing wasn't inspired.
The styling was too controversial.
The quality was not up to par.
The market was too saturated already.

Just like an Air Crash there were many reasons why the Edsel failed,
The main thing was the recession the Edsel was not the only expensive car to bit the dust in 1958
Desoto and Packer were also killed by the recession, The fact that the Edsel had lots of bells and whistles
added to the problem, Electronics were new and the Edsel had lots of problems with them!
The look of the car sure didn't help and the name was not a selling feature! there was also a problem with the boss at Ford thinking if it has any name but a ford it isn't worth building! McNamara also wanted to kill the Lincoln and the mercury lines, he also killed the 2 seater bird that out sold the Corvette by 10 to 1!

Most say the looks. The "horseshoe" grill was said to look
like it was "sucking a lemon" .
The Edsel was actually advanced for it's time, with many
features found on later model cars. A little research on
Ford's part, would have saved them a bundle. It died quickly,
in 1960, when they started looking more like the rest of
the Ford line.

Weird, laughable styling.
And it was advertised for a tiny, imaginary market segment in between the Ford and the Mercury -- a car for the rising young junior executive.
Get a load of the last, 1960, Edsel --what a psychotic styling exercise!

several reasons:
-a spectacularly bad marketing campaign, which included telling people it would have a completely different body than it did
-it was a very expensive car, introduced just when the US was entering a recession
-some great innovations, but some were just awful. Having the shifting mechanism as buttons on the steering column (where the horn used to be).

You never know. Maybe the marketing was wrong, or people did simply not like it.
There is also another theory: That is was bad luck for Mr. Ford to name a car after his son.
