Here are a bunch of links for you to check out.
Also check out galleryofguns.com and internetguncatalog.com they are distributors that sell to dealers but you can search their databases for products.

I proudly own all the Springfield XD series pistols in every caliber and barrel length. I came into soem money and not enough common sense...lol....Anyway I absolutly love these pistols. The subcomact 3 inch 9 mm is a pefect carry weapon.......They also make it in 40 cal....Which I find a little to much for a 3 inch barrel.... But nonetheless a good "man stopping" caliber. I prefer the service model 4 inch barreled .45 acp. But if you are looking at an ankle carry....Look at the 3 inch subcompact

ok this is going to be tought. if you wasn't looking for a .40 S&W for an ankle holster. Which would be heavy. Plus not the best ankle gun.

Glocks are great for new people, super easy to use,a no brainer.just point and shoot.but as a beginner like you, you should try the 9mm first.
The Glock Model 19 Rocks, and it`s very conceal friendly.
But most important is to practice with what you buy, practice practice.....practice.
I have bien shooting for over 18 Yrs now and i`m no gun expert.but if the G19 dont fit your hand then sample some at a local gunshop that dose. 'What, fit my hand"? Yes!!
If a gun is to big for your hand you may not have full control when you fire it,and that is never good, but practice all you can, your life may one day depend on it.

.40 Caliber is pretty large to be on your ankle.
Pockets, belts, fanny packs would make a lot more sense.

This is a very popular pistol here: http://www.kel-tec.com/

If you are going to carry concealed, you will want to go to:

for practical questions and answers about concealed carry.

Not sure of your budget, but if you've got a little money Kimber makes some sweet .45's! If you like the 1911 style frames, you can't go wrong with any of Kimber's pistols.

the smith and wesson .40 is a light, compact, powerful pistol. You should go to a gun range and test fire one. Also, you want the pistol to fit your hand. If you have big hands you need a bigger grip. Smaller hands, smaller grip. The best way to find out what gun fits you is to test fire them.

Depends on how much you wish to spend.......Low end best for the buck is Hi Point.........Middle of the road is Ruger........Top end Colt or Glock. Just find a brand you are interested in, type in the name, then add .com.......should bring up a page on them.
