I am 45 years old and have been running/jogging for the last 22 years or so. A couple of months back, I could not go out for the morning run due to rain for 2 days. The third day, I had pain in the front portion of the left thigh which(I thought) will go away and continued to jog. However, the pain continued so I gave a gap for a few more days. This did not help as the pain came back whenever I started running. I have opted for cycling to keep fit but since I am used to running, cycling does not give me that kind of joy and fitness. I am not on any kind of drugs or medicine routine. Will appreciate some advice and help. There is only a slight stiffness in the effected portion and no pain when I cycle, walk, etc.

It would help to have more infomation. What was your mileage? Did this happen suddenly, or gradually? (My boyfriend and I both runners and are discussing your problem.) He thinks you may have strained or irritated your quad. You could have an imbalance between your quads and hamstrings. Do you work out at the gym? This might help. I had pain in my leg like that several years ago and kept running for months but after awhile the pain kept me awake at night. I got 3 different diagnosis from my dr, the chiropracter and the physical therapists and nothing helped. Finally, I asked my dr. to send me to a sports orthopedist. He was a runner too and knew what the problem was right away: hip tendonitis. He gave me a cortosone shot and within two days I was fine and back to running pain free!

I'd recommend first that you see a doctor.

There may be a problem developing that needs medical attention. And then it may just be (hold your breath--this is gonna hurt a little) aging.

Cycling is very good and much lower impact. Swimming is also good.

What kind of bicycle are you riding? If you are riding a lightweight bike you can get some pretty decent speeds on the highway and you may find adjusting the speed will give you the workout you desire. A mountain bike might give you a better workout if you can take it off road and do some serious climbing with it.

I used to do a lot of running but had to phase that out because I was getting too many of the wrong kinds of pains. That happened when I was in my late 30's.

Always a good idea to see your physician if there is any doubt. Most will advise you without any extra charges and at your age you should be getting regular checkups anyway.

I do enjoy nature's beauty all the time, but the last time I was left speechless was more than 20 years ago. I had climbed into the eastern escarpment of the High Sierra in the Mt. Whitney area. At about 10,000 feet I was in a huge snow-covered meadow and the wind was picking up. I looked up towards the jagged crests 4,000 feet above me and the wind was blowing the powder snow off of the peaks and making long streamers, like banners, from all the pointy spires. Since the sun was setting at the time, these banners were blood red. And right then the moon was setting behind one of the impossibly high mountain peaks just two miles from my mesmerized eyes. Somehow, the majesty of all of God's creation really hit home in that one moment and I cried at the sheer beauty. No, I really did. Didn't bother me. It felt really good.

You may have pulled or tore a muscle. I would exercise lightly and try running again in a few weeks. Walking briskly actually is better than running, because it burns calories and is much easier on the muscles and joints, as evidenced by your injury. You may not find as much enjoyment in it, but how enjoyable is being in pain?

Please check the state of your arteries. You might be losing flexibility of the arteries. And the left limb is a signal. You may need food with lots of gelatine (Creme brulee, Custard cream, Jello etc...). Muscles could not be sufficiently irrigated by blood at the effort.

Im not a doctor, but usually old folks say that there's a nerve that's probably not in its right place. I hope you did stretching and stuff.

Well, I usually advice my friends to visit an acupuncturist.

You should really get that checked out. It is not something you want to take for granted. Good luck.

See an orthopedist. It could be sciatica.
