Its = possessive. The dog chased its tail.

It's = it is. It's 12:00 at night.

jp is correct. You are probably confused because its is the only word that does not use 's as the possessive.
Example: the dog's bone
Carol's house
my brother's shoe
BUT its bone, its house, its shoe
