I was recently looking into this and got some quotes for my couch and 2 armchairs. Unfortunately, the cost was about twice as much as buying new ones. Prices started at $1200 .00 for just the couch. I decided to buy new ones.

Well, I disagree with some of your responders. Reupholstering a couch means taking the cushions, arms, and base down to the frame , repairing and recovering with fabric. There you have choices which will affect the price you will pay. It is worth it to reupholster quality made furniture, such as Thomasville, Drexel Heritage, Pennsylvania House, etc. What you are looking for is the construction under the upholstery. Is it handtied, of solid wood construction with no plastic parts or joinery? Most furniture manufactured before the 1980's that was of high quality when it was purchased is worth reupholstering because it was constructed better than more recently made furniture.
Sometimes, the batting or stuffing will also need to be replaced depending on the original materials used. If down was used on the back cusions, sometimes you just need to add some to get more loft. If foam is used, it may be deteriorating and require replacing. Old pieces of furniture often used horsehair as stuffing and you may decrease the value by replacing it with synthetic materials.
The labor is not generally the most expensive part of a reupholster, the fabric is. Some reupholsters will offer you their discount on the fabric which will save you money. But, if you have an Upholstery Fabric Outlet (UFO) or Calico Corners near you that sells discounted designer fabrics, that is where you will save the most on fabrics. Take a photo of your couch and they will be able to tell you how many yards of fabric to buy.
Once you choose the reupholster to do the labor, request to see the stripped down couch. I do this for my clients to make certain they are not paying to replace cusions, batting, down, etc. that isn't necessary. Also, to inspect the condition of the frame and verify any repairs the upholster is recommending.
Since I don't know what type of couch you are intending to reupholster, it is difficult to give you an accurate range of what it will cost for your project.

Its basically stripping the couch of its outer fabric and replacing it.
Because it doesn't require making a new one from scratch, it saves time, money, and supplies, making it cost way less than getting a new one, usually it only costs a few hundred, depending on the new fabrics you choose.

Recovering furniture is very expensive and is not really worth it unless the piece is an antique. It's much easier to get a nice cover or have a custom one made to match your decor. You can take it off and wash it and change the color when you like.
