Forget about the number of calories. It's time to change your diet and start listening to your body. First listen to you body. Eat at least 5 times per day. The earlier in the day the more food that you can have; breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper. Don't forget the two snacks between the main meals. Slow down when eating. When your stomach says it is full, stop eating. Finishing everything on the stove or on your plate is nuts. Speaking of nuts, walnuts, pecans and almonds are great snacks. Don't forget fruits to go with your nuts. Keep your food as raw as possible. The vitamins will still be in it, the fiber will still be in it, and the glycemic index will be lower. If you don't know what that means, ask another question or look it up. Fiber, fiber, fiber. Stay away from trans fats and high fructose corn syrup, they are modern day poisons. Also, stay away from all diet beverages. If you are not convinced, ask another question. Stay out of fast food places, drink a lot of water and walk a little more. Last note, remember the "old saying" an apple a day keeps the doctor away. What if it is true?

Figure the amount of calories that you burn in an average day. Then eat less than the total number of calories burned, Their are many good sites that will help figure out how many calories that you are burning a day.

Thats easy, the only way to lose weight is to end the day with less calories then you have consumed.
For example, if you consume 1600 calories, the only way to lose weight would be to burn more calories than you consumed.
Im not sure how many calories you burn in your daily activities, but take that into consideration with exercise and your diet.

Total Body Makeover...Bob Greene..get it!
Check out an exercise plan that keeps you interested and stay at least at 1200 calories. Find out your Basal Metabolic Rate and make sure you work within that during exercise.
Add lifting weights to your plan and do not lose more than 2 lbs per week.
See an MD for a detailed plan and make sure you get sound advice. Research all the possibilities but make sure to get a MD approval before you begin any program.

I don't know how accurate this is. But I was told that if you take the number of pounds you want to lose and multiple it by 14, you get the change of calories per day(thru diet and exercise)
If you want to lose 40 pounds, 40*14 =560
You need eat 560 calories less per day, or burn off 560 calories more per day thru exercise than you were before. Or thru a combination of change in diet or exercise have a change in 560 per day.

Keep a food diary and get a food counts book- my bariatric physician gave me a copy by Corinne T. Netzer entitled "The complete book of food counts" available in paperback $7.99.
After you assess your eating habits, you will need to burn up or delete 500 calories every day to lose one pound per week. I.e.- there are 3,500 calories in one pound. Do not go below 1,200 calories per day without physician's approval as this is not only unhealthy but also it will backfire on you and your body will begin to store fat more efficiently because it thinks that you are experiencing a famine. There are many good resources and many bad ones therefore I strongly suggest that you find a bariatric physician, one that specializes in weight loss and not necessarily surgery, to guide you. Good luck and god bless.

Unless you're a junk food addict, forget counting your calories. Just start getting some exercise. Park your car a block away from where you need to be. It's a good start.
I lost 1/3 of my body weight (76kg to 50kg in 5-months) by walking & riding a bicycle.
These days I'm happy to walk for 90 minutes at a good pace to get to & from work.
Good luck!
