i thought i taught my dog to do "down", but now that i compare it to books' illustrations, it loks more like a crouch. It just lloks like she is on the floor waiting to run. i've noticed in books, other dogs' "down" is like a position where there legs are spread out. i want to teach my dog to "rollover", but i can't , unless i push her to one side first. what should i do?

You don't tell us how old your dog is. If under 6 motnhs old ... It's a bit early expecting her to do a proper 'Down'. Best way to do it is wait until your dog starts to do it normally (As she does when feeling like a nap) then pat him, say 'Good girl down'. Do is for a while, every so often give a treat and your dog will soon realise that down means down, not a pretence of it! And should she resume the other position, say 'No' and ignore him! She will soon understand what 'down' means! Another thing though ... I've had a few people tried to get their dog in the 'down' positon before they had mastered the 'stay'. That was wrong! Your dog needs to be able to stay when sitting before you move on to the 'down'

Best wishes

Are you saying her legs are in the same position as a sit rather than both trown out to the side so the dog is lying on one hip? If the entire hind leg from hock to toes is on the ground, the chest, and the entire front leg from elbow down so on the ground this is considered a good down by most ( it even has a name -spinx posture). I'm guessing pushing them over gently is gonna be in the charts for teaching rollover- I know I had to do that to teach my one dog to lay on the hip (a more solidly confortable way to down stay)

she sounds like an alpha dog. That type of dog takes special reading and training tips. You need to go read up on it.

use treats for the things that he/she does and you will find out how smart your dog really is.
