Bush is putting troops down there, but they aren't involved in apprehending anybody. It seems like if you want to close the border, you'd shoot at folks crossing illegally. Wouldn't it be more of a deterrant if they did?

A lot of countries shoot people who attempt to cross their borders illegally. I'm just curious becase now some try it because the odds are that they get in. But if we had military snipers with night scopes, the odds would be very high they would not even survive the attempt. Are things so bad in Mexico that they'd still try?

I don't think it would completely stop, but I would bet dollars to donuts that there would be a drastic reduction in it.

America has been a country of immigrants like forever. Just because the immigrants come now from Mexico, the media doesn't have to make such a big fuss about it. Like one hundred or two hundred years ago. The English, Germans, Italians and so on, most of them came also over illegally. And the government made them legal citizens as fast as they could and that is what, both the republicans and the democrats are trying to do at present.

You must be referring to East Germany, no? It never stopped some people... Besides: most of those National Guard are hispanics, married to "gasp" other hispanics, decendants of immigrants, or illegals themselves. Do you really think they;ll shoot these people? And as for your "hypothetical" Shootings have been taking place for ever... haven't you heard of Texas rancher groups that go down to the border for that purpose? I think they call themselves "minutemen"... Anyway, You can't man every incho of the border and all the deaths from shootings, murder, starvation, heat, thirst, etc. DON'T AND WON'T STOP ANYONE FROM COMING HERE... The fact is that has made martyrs of the dead already... If someone REALLY wants to make a better life for themselves and their children: nothing can stop them!!! IT DIDN'T STOP THE PILGRIMS AND EUROPEAN (I'm guessing YOUR ancestors, yes?) from getting on a ship, legally or "smuggling themselves for free", and having to endure weeks, may, months at a time at sea in horrid conditions... only to arrive in a land full of hatred and racist feelings toward their cause... Do the reasearch, it's there... HISTORY WILL ALWAYS REPEAT ITSELF...

It would absoultly be more of a deterant if the National Guard was authorized to use deadly force/shoot at offenders.

Some would argue that, often, illegal crossing of the border holds inherent dangers, and immigrants die frequently. So, the threat of death may not be enough.

The National Guard can't stop Mexicans from crossing. All they can do is call the Border Patrol and report that someone crossed over.

I forget which country just did that today, I saw a headline. I expect you got it from there.

We are different. We don't shoot at people trying to cross. I don't want to be like them.

I just want our borders secure.

I think if they enforce our laws and put up the 'smart fences' and sensors they are talking about, increase the border patrol and bring in cameras and drone aircraft patrols, we won't need to shoot.

Geez what sortof a world you want to live in? Some poor soul crossing over just to work and you want to shoot to kill? Did I wake up and suddenly discover I am in Nazi Germany? Who should we shoot next?

That moron Bush is only grandstanding to get the conservative's support. He doesnt care about the border any more then he cares about this country.....get a clue! W

What countries? Third world dictatorship? Is that the kindof world you want to live in???

i think it would make a difference, negatively. The uprising would spark a wild fire of emotion and cause swarms of people to riot. I mean how can you shoot somebody for wanting to come over here for a better life.

I'm not saying we should let them come over illegaly, but shooting them is not the answer. I mean why not shoot the people who stand on a corner and beg....make them work! Get the point?

Nope. Death is no deterrent to them - many many have died in the crossing and they are still coming. It's a desperate situation down there, folks, or ppl would not be willing to risk death to get here.

Nope, people would still risk it. Too much money to be made here. The out in the open mass crossings would lessen but immigrant smuggling would increase.
