Skyeblack, please don't listen to anyone that doesn't list their sources. You have received a LOT of BS answers here.

Yes, you will get a break for Christmas, if you so desire. It is called "Christmas Exodus". You will be charged leave (vacation time) for leaving base to go home. You will have to pay for your flight/bus/train/rental car. You don't have to take leave, and there will be some folks that stay during Christmas. The Dining Facility (DFAC) will do a Christmas dinner (turkey, stuffing, 'tater, etc), the training will be minimized/non-existent, and you save both money and leave. To go home at Exodus is your choice.

Good luck, and congrats!

My son went in a week before Thanksgiving & got an exodus for 2 weeks for Christmas. They will not pay travel but he was not docked for pay. I think it was part of his leave time but being he was in boot camp, OCS,BOLC, IOBC, Airborne School, Ranger School he did not need alot of leave. They get vacation & more holidays than anywhere I worked. They get Washington's Birthday. They sacrifice a lot but are more fair than most people give them credit. My son's wife had a baby in Army & it cost $0 and my daughter had a baby 2 month's later with insurance & she & her hushand were stuck with a $2400 bill after insurance paid. There are benefits.

during my boot camp long ago. once your active, you get two weeks off after camp. then get assigned from there. you get a month a yeat and had to put in for the leave for that time. if everyone took off, there would be no military to protect. the higher the rank and time in got the best times. your paid by the month so your leaves are paid for anyway. only after boot camp do you get the leaves, not during it. we went through x-mas but they gave us a few days on the base to goof off. during any conflict or war, you have to have so many points to get any leave and it was rare for that. how they are doing it now with iraq, its constantly changing.

Yes, you will be able to take leave during Christmas. Starting around 17 Dec and ending around 2 Jan. You will be charged the leave and will have to pay your way home. This time in TRADOC is called exodus.

Typically, training is scheduled so that these breaks can be accomodated. If you "take" the break, the time is charged against your leave balance. As a newbie, you won't have any, so you may be starting off with a negative balance if you do.

If you go home, yes, you have to pay your own way.

Usually they will nto place your basic training around boot camp because giving you that break screws up your training. But if you do end up there for that time frame, it is usually a two week break and they will charge you leave when you go. Good luck to you.

Don't know, but I spent new years in the USAF basic training. It was my 4th day in basic. They got us up for revelee, hollered at us as they took roll call and gave us the usual shpeal of drinking two glasses of water at each and every meal, then just before they dismissed us to a full day of drills, the Sgt said, "Oh! And by the way. Happy new year!. . . DISMISSED!"
