What in the world, where are you people from? I live in Maine- when I go to register a car for the first time, I fill out paperwork, pay them and they hand over the plates. That simple.

Usually if u register the car u get the plate that day. Unless u order a special tag such as a personalized plate. In that case u get a 60 day temporary tag to put in ur back window behind the driver. I'm not sure about other states but, this is how Alabama does it. It usually takes it up to 6 weeks to receive the plate in the mail.

In Texas 10 days to 2 weeks for standard plates, personalized plates take about 6 wks to 2 months.

You usually get either the license plate on the spot, or within 10 days or so thereafter, if you have a "temporary" plate (varies from state to state).

Most DMV's hand it over when you turn the paperwork in to them, right there on the spot.

In California it can take several weeks to receive your new car's license plate in the mail. I have even waited several months before to get it, but this is unusual. If you haven't received your new plate within 6 weeks or so, I'd check with the department of motor vehicles to see what the problem is. Thank God I live in California...imagine having to live in a place where life is so simplistic like MAINE!!

If you walk the paperwork though yourself, about 10 minutes once you get through the line.

Many states have temp tags good for 30 days. In those that don't (MA for example) the dealer will get them for you and will have them installed when you take delivery, normally the next day, or you can run the paperwork yourself at the DMV/RMV and be done in a few minutes.

Depends on the state. Some issue them immediately, other do the 30 to 90 day temporary "paper" plate or "TAG APPLIED FOR"

You will get a temporary tag when you buy the car. You should be able to apply for the license in 30 days. Paperwork, paperwork. The title has to be transferred.
