It certainly isn't normal. It could indicate many things: brain tumor, dementia, ear infection (these last two have already been mentioned). You need to take your cat to a veterinarian, okay?

He is old, and like us humans, many of the senses would be failing: eyesight, hearing, intellect.... Geriatric cats often display confused behavior - its a sign of senility. He is probablay trying to remember what he got up for and is walking around in circles. But if it truly bothers you, you can call a vet and ask.

Have you had your cat to the vet? It could have had a stroke. I would take it to the vet and have it looked at and if it is an older cat I might suggest a senior blood panal, it's something to compare things to as time goes on and it gets older, easier to fid out if there's a health problem,

Our cat Sasha is 12 years old and blind in one eye.
We took him in to our vet to find out what was causing him to---you guessed it--- walk in circles.
Apparently he doesn't realize what his lack of depth perception is causing him to do!
--Common problem for an animal blinded in one eye.
