A comedian said his joke was "postmodern misogny, steeped in irony", individually i know what each of those word means, but collectively that makes no sense. Why were ppl laughing, it was not funny, or they just like the way it sounded.

P.S not retard answers, Thank you

After a grueling hour of racking my brain, I've got the answer:
Before I start, I must say that the audience must have been Harvard graduates if they understrood this on cue...
To properly answer your question, I must first explain what exactly is 'postmodern misogyny'. Postmodernism is an impulse to deconstruct totalising systems of knowledge. It emphasizes that a particular reality is a social construction by a particular group, community, or class of persons... Whereas, misogyny, in feminist theory, is reconized as a political ideology (like racism or anti-Semitism) that justifies and maintains the subordination of women by men. In sum, misogyny IS a totalising system: exactly the opposite of what postmodernism supports.
So, the irony then becomes apparent by saying 'postmodern misogyny' since it's putting two coherent yet conflicting ideas together as one ideas, thus making the term incoherent and completly absurde. So, postmodern misogyny is in fact ' steeped in irony'!

I hope my intensive brain racking session helped you.

The phrase in itself doesn't mean anything. I think the comedian was just stringing big words together to sound intellectual, probably because he isn't intellectual. For a comedian to say his joke is "postmodern misogny, steeped in irony" after just talking about her bra or the last time he farted or got drunk, is funny. You just wouldn't expect to hear that level of intellect following a silly joke.

I think they just liked the way it sounded, the joke may have had nothing to do with that stuff, but the fact that he was making fun of his own joke that way sounds funny.

it would be a tremendous help to know the joke to which he was referring. you won't get a good explanation without a context
