I agree with most of the opinions above. I, as a man, don't do it for the purpose of impressing girls. It happens regardless of who is sitting around me. Also, men are territorial by nature. We also like to be bigger and stronger and more commanding. Essentially, we like being manly. That is why we work out even though a lot of women don't like overly muscular men more than regular guys. It subconsciously signals, "this space is mine, don't try to enter it unless you are a hot girl or want your butt kicked."
Another more obvious advantage is that it allows breathing room for one's family jewels. Poor jewels, they are almost always trapped in the little space that boxers (for some men briefs, which create more friction in my opinion) allow. And if it is a tight space, the thighs rub up on them. Rubbing creates friction, which creates heat, which causes sweat which must be breathed. If it is the right kind of rubbing, even more room is required.
Ok, that's enough for now.

Tantalising as it is to suggest that seduction is the reason, biology is actually the culprit. Men and women are built differently -- but you already knew that. Their pelvic bones are shaped differently and put together differently, so the femur fits into the socket in a slightly different manner. And this is the reason why most men (not just the ones on the subway) sit with their legs splayed open. It's a more comfortable position. Next time you're at a ball park, or stadium, take a look at the way guys are sitting. Most will have their knees apart.

I think you are just paranoid that men do something just because it is sexual and you think they are all trying to hit on you. Sexual...sort-of, if you have not noticed yet, a man's reproductive organs are external, and to sit with their legs closed is uncomfortable. I sit with my legs open all the time, when I'm sitting at a desk or at the diner table, but you don't see that, and I'm sure a lot or most guys do it for the same reason. Let it go.
You want to talk about harassment?
Why do so many women wear tight tops on purpose and then get mad when men are staring at their breasts?

It is just a natural sitting position for some men, other men have morals or should I say manners and know the proper way to sit when across from a women, while some men are just plain jerks and sit legs spread wide for the showing of what they think you want to see.as for me I will how is most comfortable for me, but while in the company of women, I will sit how I was taught by my parents, and by the U.S. Military of 20 years

We dont mean to be offensive. We are such endowed that sitting with spread legs is comfortable. Eases the pressure created while walking, standing, so only when we sit, we relax.
For seduction we have many a trick up our sleeve, sorry, pants.

Never thought about it till ya asked. So I tried sitting with my legs crossed, it got a little uncomfortable so I had to rearrange the baggage, sat with them held together, that takes to much concentration and my legs got tired, opted for half spread, fairly comfortable not to offensive, so it's gotta be a comfort thing and not with any underlying sexual reasons. Hi. Its not to attract or anything of that sort. Its scientific in most of the men to spread and sit with their legs, usually when they dont take up any physical fitness process.
When they have experienced sex in any form, the muscle on the spinal - open up, thus making them feel that when they spread - they'll feel more relaxed. However, due to regular fitness training, etc. men can avoid this.
Hope the info was of some use...
Cheers..

Littlebigdog is correct. This is not an acceptable position. Men are taught the proper way to sit just as women are taught to sit with their ankles crossed. I'm afraid that men let go because we are losing our "good manners" and etiquette; it just doesn't take a priority any more.

Normally, it is a comfortable position. It really isn't used for seduction purposes, it's just nice to have some room and air.
