Sixteen nuclear powered air craft carriers that we can park on your back door and smart bomb you at will day and night... that sounds like a superpower to me, not to mention all the cruise missiles and spy satellites.

We can call ourselves a superpower for the following reasons:

1. When no one could defeat England, we gave them the big fat finger when it came to them trying to tell us what to do about 230 years ago.

2. When Europe was getting its butt kicked by some German guys who were bent on world domination, we came along and smacked some sense into the Germans.

3. When a guy with bad facial hair thought it would be okay to wack 6 million people with the help from some Asian and Italian powers, we spanked him, then turned around and told the Asians to knock it off. (But hey, we're all friends now)

4. We got to the moon first.

5. Because dispite the fact that a retarded frat boy is making some of the worst decisions ever concieved and with the lowest ratings possible, we continue to be a beacon to those who want the chance to live their lives in the best possible enviornments. (Even with Bush making life suck in general, it is still better than starving to death in South America)

Being a superpower has nothing to do with how many wars you have won, it has to do with your economical/political/military might. The US has the best balance of all the above, plus the population to match.

At one point in time, there were several superpowers, but do to the collapse of their system (Russia), the loss of economical power (China), or a variety of other reasons, the US is the only remaining one.

Because of nukes and hi-tech toys. But these don't make the generals and politicians any smarter, that's why Iraq is in chaos, Vietnam was a loss, and Korea was a draw.

Its called power projection, all countries have some degree of it .It means putting and maintaining enough men , supplies ,etc. beyond the borders of the 'home' country. We can go any where or strike anywhere on the planet, i.e missle, bombers ,aircraft carriers. We are not like most other countries where our nieghbors are the only one we can get to.Let me put it this way Chinas army means nothing beyond thier borders .They dont have what is called a ''blue water'' navy .Yet.That means they cant support an armada 1000 miles away from China. We can and have.Thats why.

well..i'm not taking the bait...my pride in my country is not tied up in being a superpower, so i don't care whether anyone refers to us as that or not. we will take care of our own, that's all that counts. you obviously have little understanding of either vietnam or korea, so why should iraq be any different. you're batting 1000.

us. guns. and super potential. we've got more. it TOTALLY sucks. but it's true. we've give scientists the right money and bought their genius. the thing with having countries that churn out bajillions of whatever - is that there'll be a lot of mediocre and less talent. that's the group that stays. the rest step out - and learn their worth in a world marketplace. traditionally, the us had the resources to pay for those minds.

as an american, I will testify that we are a largely peaceful nation. we don't particularly like war. if called to fight - for honorable reasons - we will. but with the world as it is today - I, as one living member, question the validity of such armed conflict.

defense, sure. (certainly more subtle.) but be a good neighbor, and so will we. most of us.

our radicals are as radical as anywhere else. but rather than being margionalized, we glorify their oddity - and publicize their strangeness. PLEASE - YOU - DEAR READER don't judge us by them.

so that's it. the us has bombs. but WE don't want to use them.

the first line of this textual content is a question, not a actuality of actuality. we are will the lone superpower immediately. that is in hazard of dropping that status because ninety% of the inhabitants can't authentic interpret a information article.

The US has the world's largest national economy.

The US has the world's most expensive and high-tech armed forces, in terms of raw expenditures. (It is larger than the next TEN nations combined.)

US culture influences the world, be it its mammoth media machine, CNN news, the Internet, the iPod.
