Try double-clicking the word you want.

Your computer might be suffering from being turned on too long.

Click on the document, use the cursor keys (arrow keys) to navigate to the word you want to select.

Now, hold down the shift key, and arrow over the entire word. The Highlight will extend as long as the shift key is down.

I just thought of something... Certain computers have a mouse control program which makes one click of your mouse act like two mousclicks for the computer.

Check it by:
Start Menu - Settings - Control Panel
Double Click on "Mouse", and flip through the options there. Your answer might be found.

You can also select a word by clicking after it or before it then hold down SHIFT while pressing either forward or back on the arrow pad until the word is selected.

try clicking in front of the word and then holding SHIFT and the right arrow key untill the whole of your word is selected

Sometimes I have better control of highlighting when I start at the end of the word I want to highlight and go to the left.

hmm all i can think of is need to be more carefull with the mouse and how your selecting it. u can also use shift plus left arrow key to highlight.
