It is the same thing, probably better since you have to study to pass without the help of professionals.

As people have pointed out, there's probably no great answer, and there's no real proof to say that a high school grad is smarter or better than a GED or the other way around. The question has more to do with appearance than anything. There are people, companies, colleges, organizations, etc. out there that do believe that a H.S. diploma is better, for whatever reason. So, figure out what you want to do after getting your diploma or GED and find out if they prefer one over the other.

In some ways it is better than a H.S diploma. In a recent study, less than one-third of high school graduates could even pass the GED. Pretty scary! I knew someone who went and got her GED. According to the people that gave her the test, since she scored good enough on the test, she could go to any college that she wanted to and not take an entrance exam. However, this was ten years ago, so times may have changed.

It has come to the point where the GED carries about as much weight as a high school diploma. The question of how good one is over the other remains relative.
If you get top grades and do honors work at a good high school, your diploma is going to carry more weight than a GED.
The work that you do and where you go to school will always make a difference.
My answer: It still depends on time and circumstance.

It's better than not having either.
What really matters in the real world is what you've done after high school. What college courses, what job training courses, etc. A GED and a HS Diploma put you in a position to attain higher things. If you have the opportunity though, go for the HS diploma.

Depends if you plan to go to college. If not, employment recruiters will look at the GED as a short-cut (I didn't want to bother with finishing high school, so I just got the GED and got out). If you are going to go to college (as long as you get at least an Associates' degree), recruiter's won't be interested in the GED, but what you've done since.

Yes I have my GED and am in college. It in certain ways can be better. For example if I stayed in HS I would not have graduated till I was 19 but I just took my GED and graduated and started college when I was 17.
