Get a retired racing grey hound. They are HUGE couch potatoes!
Or you can get an older dog from a shelter, they always need good homes! Contrarty to popular belief, a lot of the time smaller breed dogs don't work out in condos/apartments. My friend has an apartment that isn't too big and he has 2 shiba inus, they play with each other so much that they don't need a backyard (even tho it'd be nice) Obviously, don't get a puppy. They need a yard and they take a lot of patience! Check out your local shelters and see what they have to offer!
Oh and DO NOT get a Jack Russel Terrier if you live in an apartment. They are extremely hyper and energetic! Look up the breed and you'll see for yourself!

I love the Shiz Tzu breeds. They are very cute (have that "puppy" look) and they good personalities. They may want to run around some, but they are small (mine weighs 12 lbs.) so an apartment would be okay. You could probably train it to use newspapers or "puppy pads" (instead of the out of doors). Also they do not shed. Because they don't shed a lot of people who are allergic to dogs can have a breed that doesn't shed.
I also suggest getting books about the different breeds and they're different temperments and personallities. Also I suggest going to different pet stores and "visiting" some of the different breeds (you could also check out local animal shelter).
I do not suggest buying a pet at a store, as I have heard that the prices are jacked up, and sometimes the puppies are not in the best of health. When it is time to acquire your new baby, check with breeders; animal shelters [you can sometimes get pure breeds (without papers)] or you could get a "mutt";
Good luck and enjoy your new baby when you get him/her.

This question is a lot more difficult than you may think.
First, what type of exercise are you willing to do, 3 or more hours a day, one hour a day, occasional small walks, 1-3 sessions throughout the week ...
what type of grooming are you willing to do?
do you want a dog that will be protective? easily trained..
If you are willing to give the dog exercise, any size dog can be in the apartment with you. As well, some of the larger breeds that you may love may be couch potatoes...
Find dogs that you love, and do the research on the breed to find out if they fit your lifestyle.

Italian greyhounds make great apartment dogs. The don't need a lot of exercise despite their athletic looks. The have wonderful temperments. They don't tend to bark much at all but when they do they have normal dog barks instead of the yippee ones that smaller dogs have.
They are best suited for warmer environments. Also, they are fragile and tend to break their legs quite frequently. Check out http://www.italiangreyhound.org/ for more info.

its never a good idea to get a dog until you are in a permanent situation - eg. own your own home.. since apartments - you never really know how long you will be there and if you are forced to leave will you be able to find a place that allows pets??? make sure you are even allowed dogs where you are - I really dont like seeing dogs in apartments - not because apartments are small but because their are no yards..
if you must -get an adult dog not a pup and not an intelligent breed - get something like a Shih Tzu or other dog that is low activity level and can be bored

A PUG! Pugs get along with everyone. They are small dogs (me and my husband had 2 in a one bedroom apartment) But they are tough like big dogs. U know not the kind where u step on them and they break. They have wonderful personalities and will love you unconditionally. They are also great with kids.

Obviously something small, that doesn't need as much room to roam. Maybe a shih-tzu or another small breed like that.
Small dogs still need exercise beyond pacing the apartment, and would have to be let out to do it's "business" each time.

I have cockers, chihuahuas & tomorrow I'm getting a Cavalier King Charles from Germany...so excited! Since he's my first CKC I have to say that cockers are the best dogs. Chis get nervous, don't care for strangers & bark at everything in sight.

Since you are staying in the appartement which only have two rooms is bettet u keep a dog that is small enough and i recommend that the dog is run free! I will recommend that u keep bishan in your appartement. WHY? This is because this is a small dog with fluffy fur in white colour. Is weight just 10kg. You should train your dog to go potty in the toilet or on the newspaper. Slightly beat the dog battock when he/she potty on the floor and then carry him/ her to the newspaper or in the toilet it works for me and i even try. I hope it will just works for you!
