I think what you are refering to is called tonsil stones. Wow I never knew anything I learned in college would actually help me in the real world!!

Tonsil Stones (tonsilloliths) are caused by an accumulation of sulfur-producing bacteria and debris that become lodged in the tonsils. This debris (which can include mucous from post nasal drip) putrifies in the back of your throat, and collects in the tonsil crypts (small divots or pockets which appear on the surface of the tonsils).

When this debris combines with the Volatile Sulfur Compounds produced by the anaerobic bacteria beneath the surface of your tongue, along with the tonsil stones it can also create chronic Halitosis (and other stubborn bad breath and taste disorders).
As we get older, tonsilectomies become increasingly dangerous, but aside from that, even if you have your tonsils removed, you will most likely still have bad breath! Why is that?

You see, the sulfur producing bacteria breeding beneath the surface of your tongue (which are integral to the creation of those tonsil stones) are also the most likely candidates to cause bad breath!

So, even if you have your tonsils removed, unless you remove or hinder these anaerobic bacteria, your friends may still exhibit those tell-tale signs that YOU have bad breath! (ie pulling away, offering you gum, twitching at their nose, etc.)

And, since you can't have your tongue removed (at least not in the U.S.), there is a better idea: Fortunately, getting rid of tonsil stones is not that difficult...

A simple combination of AktivOxigen Tablets and Nasal Sinus Drops will effectively eliminate tonsil stones without unnecessary tonsil surgery. Plus, occasional use of a Oxygenating Spray will help to immediately neutralize the anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria on contact.

It's coming from your tonsils. It's called a tonsil stone.

Macrophages and other white blood cells concentrate by the tonsilar crypts as well, in response to the microorganisms attracted to the crypts. Accordingly, the tonsilar crypts serve a forward sentry role for the immune system, by providing early exposure of immune system cells to infectious organisms which may be introduced into the body via food or other ingested matter.

However, the tonsilar crypts often provide such an inviting environment to bacteria that bacterial colonies may form solidified "plugs" or "stones" within the crypts. In particular, sufferers of chronic sinusitis or post-nasal drip frequently suffer from these overgrowths of bacteria in the tonsilar crypts. These small whitish plugs, termed "tonsilloliths" and sometimes known as "tonsil stones," have a foul smell and can contribute to bad breath; furthermore, they can obstruct the normal flow of pus from the crypts, and may irritate the throat (people with tonsil stones may complain of the feeling that something is stuck in their throat).

I pretty much copied then pasted what wikipedia told me..but I attached the link below, so you can see with your own eyes, exactly what it says. Hope this helps!

I get them when I have a sinus infection. It's mucus that's dripped down from your sinuses (post-nasal drip) and has gotten caught in your throat. It smells because it's either infected or been there for a while. I'd try taking a decongestant regularly for about a week until it clears up. If your mucus is still yellowish you may need to go to the doctor for an antibiotic.

I've had these for YEARS. I've asked a lot of professionals and they pretty much say what the last couple of posters have said.

It's not phlegm, it's not snot, etc.

I have these little pockets in my tonsils and I see those little white things and press them out with q-tips all the time. I don't know why I was cursed with them but I would love to rid myself of them and the stink. Good luck and if you ever get a cure for them let me know!

It's a piece of food that gets stuck in the back of your throat. The stink is from the bacteria that grow around it.

I had "pitted tonsils" that would collect small particles of food as I swallowed. I finally had to have my tonsils out because they progressively got worse. Maybe check with an Ear/Nose/THroat guy.

You probably have a throat infection and need antibiotics. It might be more appropriate to see your medical doctor for this, because you are more likely to be covered under your medical insurance for the visit and culture, if needed.

Do you smoke? If so, it could be from that.
Or might you be sick?
I've personally never heard of spitting out clumps of plaque, unless you've gone months or years without brushing your teeth.
