Dewclaws. The 'thumb'. If it is a "hanging dewclaw" ( a nail where a "thumb" would be that has no cartlage or bone structure) Hanging dewclaws can get caught on things as the dog gets older, causing pain, bleeding and infections. If however there is cartlage or bone structure than you do not need to get them removed.

For most dogs, the vet needs to cut off the dew claw, which the puppy uses during birth. They can be a source of infection, so they generally are removed. It doesn't hurt the dog. The dew claw is somewhat up the leg.

Most people cut off the "dew claws" shortly after birth. These are tiny claws higher up on the front and back legs that are not connected to any toe bones.

Dewclaws. If you do not know how to do this you need to take them in to the Vet.
You DO NOT wait until they are fixed! They are done at 2-5 days.

are you referring to the dew claw? this is often removed because it serves no purpose and is apt to create problems by getting in the way. but this is on all breeds.
