The dog pool has been collecting rainwater for the last day and I have noticed the dogs driking from it several times. My Great Dane has been really clingy tonight like she might be sick. It's also raining outside so maybe she doesn't want to go out and go potty in the rain? Not sure but thought I would see how the rainwater question would help me...

I can't say for sure. However, Great Danes are one of the breeds prone to BLOAT. Common symptoms of bloat are:

major anxiety
abdominal swelling after meals
gagging
whining
heavy salivating
pacing
dry vomiting
heavy panting
shallow breathing
restlessness
excessive heartbeat
weak pulse with off colored (blue, dark red, white) gums

"Initially affected dogs show some of the symptoms above and are not interested in food or water. After 30-60 minutes the dog begins to appear swollen in its midsection due to accumulation of gas in the stomach than begin to pant heavily and breathing becomes rapid and shallow. Keep in mind that the gagging and vomitting is always unproductive."

BLOAT can be fatal. If your dog is exhibiting any of the symptoms above, time is of the essence. Get veterinary care immediately. Do not wait for tomorrow.

Rain water can also cause illness not just human but also pet like dog this is because due to the rain that contain asid. Dogs can get sick in many way such as home sick, miss their owner, and also miss their daily schedule activity. Is best to get the dog to vec or u do treatment by yourself by giving 1 panadol / flu medicine to your great dane. As far as i known great dane is a huge dog and it will not easily get sick by just drinking rain water it should be other things. Sorry to say that maybe your great dane are not healthy in terms of immune system. One solutions is to give some vitamin mainly for dogs such as vitamin c, this will more a less will help some to restrengthen your great Dane immune system. The other thing is dog food give some nutrition's dog food to your dog such as holistic dog food (is a bit of expensive compare to other). I hope this will help your dog.

does the rainwater run off of anything that might have collected some bacteria, or any dirt or anything? if the water is running off the roof where there might be something the dog shouldn't be consuming. otherwise, i don't see how that rainwater would make her sick. our dog definitely hates to go out in the rain!

Yes.. any sitting water outside carries tons of bacteria and germs. dogs can get a disease called giardia.. it's not fatal or anything but it does make them sick. Try not to let them drink from rainwater or water that hasn't been changed or puddles.

Oh yeah... there's a few different things she could catch from drinking the water... especially if an infected dog had been there before. Take her to the Vet and have her checked out. Better safe than sorry. Make sure she's completely vaccinated as well since she's playing outside and there are infectious diseases dogs can catch from feces and urine and pass to you...

Well wishes! :)

If its fresh rain water ,no it wont make your Great Dane sick. But if water been sitting for awhile ( a few days ) it can be filled with mosquito,s and larva. Also to much water on a Great Dane can cause bloat ( the stomach flips ) My Great Dane died from bloat, He was eating to much snow back when i lived in a snowing climate.Few signs My Great Dane was ill, he just went asleep in morning found him dead. Had him to Vet for autopsy, it was Bloat.
So be careful on how much water a Great Dane and other large Breeds drink at one time.
Take Care ,

i cant see where rainwater would hurt any dog. imagine all the strays that drink rainwater to survive. animals do survive out there by drinking rainwater and eating garbage. its so sad but they do it to survive. if in doubt, ask your vet . hope your dog gets better soon..

the only time i've heard of a dog getting sick from drinking rain water is when it mixed with antifreeze from a car. but i supposed if there was something in the pool besides water (like bug spray or house hold chemicals) they could get sick, or if you live in a city area that gets alot of acid rain.

Unlikely there would be anything nasty in the rainwater. She just wants some attention and play time and doesn't want to go outside.

The dog water may not be the culprit. Could your dog have gotten into something else outside? My dog always acts "funny" after she has eaten rotten food she had found outside, or any numerous dead things that she manages to find.

If you are catching rain water off a roof check the roof for anything unusual (catching off tiles can sometimes be a problem) If you have a open fire or woodheater the soot can sometimes settle on the roof and can cause stomach aches.
