I'm not sure where these answers came from...not liking someone has nothing to do with becoming a Ranger, as for the 9 week long course, yes it is called Ranger school but anyone can get into that....here's the jist of it.

If you are talking about going to a Ranger Battalion, then that is volunteer. After you pass airborne and if you are offered a Ranger contract you will go onto RIP (ranger indoctrination program) which is a 4 week course. IF you pass that (it's very difficult, I can't think of the success rate right nwo but it's low) you will be assigned to a Ranger Battalion. There are only 3, 2 in Georgia and one in Washington state. Once you are in Battalion you ARE a RANGER!! Dont' be confused about people you see with Ranger Tabs walking around....if they are not in Battalion they are not Rangers, they are just Ranger qualified (this seems confusing for most people). After being in Battalion a certain amount of time you will have to chance to go to Ranger School (9 week long course) and get your scroll which makes you eligible for leadership positions. Again, Regular Army can go to Ranger school because it is a leadership course, but this does not make them "rangers".

You must first graduate Airborne School & then volunteer. 25% of volunteers are accepted by qualifications to attend Ranger School. Then you must survive the 9 weeks of training & class only 64% ever graduate. Only 14% graduate without a recycle (repeat of class). You only get 2 tries to make it through the class. Officiers are given 1st shot at open spots in school. It took my son as who was a Lt. - 3 classes before they had an opening in the school but he was one of the 14% to get through first try with no recycles. The average weight loss for the 9 week school is 35 lbs. - you sleep 2-3 hrs a night. They are trying you break you mentally & physically. It is a very elite fighting unit.

you sign up, they select from that list. You have to pass certain qualifications and there has to be a slot open for a ranger unit that needs your MOS. You can sign up before you're MOS Q'd, though, I believe.
