After an academic study of the Bible I found out the finite details of our favorite Bibical Characters that we thought we knew as children.

Pleasantly: I found that the Bible does in fact teach that the Earth has been around for ages before the creation of Adam and not the 7 days that everyone believes. Additionally, the whole concept of the Angelic Conflict was intriguing.

Unpleasantly: That lots of important principals in the Bible have been lost in translation throughout the years and all the current editions of English translated Bible. You must definitely study the original languages to get the real story in which the author wanted to convey to the reader.

Pleasantly... that it's not so cut-and-dried against women taking leadership roles in the church (Priscilla, Lydia, the church at Phillipi, etc)

Unpleasantly... a lot of people in the Bible died for petty things: kids for making fun of prophets, whole villages just for being the wrong race (not Jewish), and a couple of old folks in the book of Acts for not giving all their money in the church. All of these were attributed to God's actions, that really bothers me.

Learning some of the cultural traditions of the jews of Jesus' time was very helpful. For example When a man was to take a wife it was common for her to remain with her parents while he prepared a home for her. This would often be an addition to his fathers house. This parrallel john 14:1-4. Jesus is preparing a home for his bride, the church.

That my parents needed to be baptised. Mom was just before dying. Still working on Dad.

I learned one simple thing. "It not what you know, but, WHO you know"! That simple. If a person learns everything there is in the Bible and they not know Jesus, they learned NOTHING! I found two verses. John 5:39-40. This puts it into a nut shell.
The unpleasant thing is; The Children of God are Forgiven, but, we DO suffer the consequences of our sins! King David the example here, hate to use him like this, but, READ it. After Bathsheba; David's life was not a bowl of cherries. BUT, God forgave him and loved him.

In "The Archko Volume", the writings of the Sanhedrin, was a defining moment for me...

The first four chapters were historically "boring", but when it came to the interviews with the different people about Jesus, that was great....
BUT! the defining interview was with Caiaphas, the High Priest (who had Jesus killed)....He shares how Jesus appeared to him, and HE BELIEVES! It also documents how he resigned from the office of High Priest because of it.

I HAD TEARS AND CHILLS!!... and as I went to my pastor's wife to tell her, and she just laughed and said, "Your Pastor had the same reaction!"

I was amazed at how the whole Bible was interwound - inter related - cross referenced - centuries before computers. Written by different men with different backgrounds over so many years.
