If you are gay, how have you been discriminated against in the past... if at all?

Not too long ago, my partner were denied renting a house because we were gay.

At first, the owners thought I was single and accepted my rental application. After they found out about my partner (I mean... like 2 hours after I introduced him), they called and told me they were sorry, but "... had rented the house to someone else."

"It's is really more of a family-oriented neighborhood, anyway," they mentioned before hanging up the telephone.

We have since found another house, and I never reported this, but has anyone else had problems like this? This was the first time that I had been discriminated against... this bad, anyway.

Has anyone else encountered this? Anything similar?

I understand about the job thing. Right now I work for a far-right conservative newspaper. I have the opportunity to also write part-time for my state's GLBT publication, but am fearful of doing so because of my other job. It sucks that we have to even think about things like that. :-\

My former boss made it very clear to me that he did not want me employed there when rumors of my sexuality started circulating. He never came right out and said anything discriminating to me, but I know because of what other people have told me. He did everything he could to make me resign. He could not fire me because he had no ligitimate reason. That burned his butt. I continued to work there for two more years after the fact, just to irritate him. I have since changed jobs and I am sure that he danced when I resigned, but not nearly as much as I did.

WOW. My heart sank. Isn't your relationship part of "family" too? I haven't had the pleasure of being discriminated against (yet), but I have seen it and stood up to it countless times. The best bet would be to get something in writing about the denial of housing, and contact a GLBT friendly attorney that specializes in that area. Your case may be as simple as the date the ink dried on the "other" rentals agreement. At best, you can file a grievance with the Better Business Bureau...it will be on their record.

I've had similar experience to that. I've also had bosses tell me or my gf (of 5 years) that when one of us was hospitalized, had a major medical test, or an emergency...what's the difference, it's not like you're married!! things of that nature. I also has things thrown at me once when I was with a grouop of girls(bottles garbage etc). People are very ignorant sometimes.

I'm straight so no I haven't but that is discrimination for sure.I'm wondering did they guess that you both were gay or did you tell them? I was thinking two guys can share an apartment or house
what ever their sexuality.

I have not had anything like this happen but I am glad that you reported them. Good for you! Keep your head up and keep in mind that there are many close mind people in this world and they only hurt them self. Be proud and stay strong and keep fighting for equality.
