why does she do that? Is it a form of pain control?

to chamely 3-- she has let me watch her give birth to two sets of kittens. I actually had to help her with the last set. I cut the cord on two of them because she wouldn't bite it off. I'm not sure why.

she didn't eat several of the placentas either. She may have been full. (?)

It's a way to relax and ease the pain. Call it Kitty LaMaze. I think it may release endorphins, which help ease the pain.

From my understanding, animals who generally use 4 legs aren't in a lot of pain during labor due to the way their pelvises are structured. There's generally only pain when there's a serious problem. She was probably just waiting for all the kittens to be born, relaxed and calm. And another thing, I'm surprised your cat let you watch her in labor and during her kittens' births! What a trusting feline you have!

My cat does that.. I believe (truly) she is just hapy to have the babies -- like an mother would be between twins or multiple births -- happy (to see the ones born, healthy). She loves her babies and is glad to finally be able to take care of them, see them. If she purrs when your around, she's happy & proud of her babies. (Not a form of pain control.)

I know that cats not only purr when they are content, but at other times, the cat is a wonder to behold, so mine tells me.

I read this in several cat books-- cats purr not only when they are happy but they also purr when they are in pain.

Cats purr for many reasons. It's usually a social thing, like when she's in your lap, or it might be an attempt to comfort herself. I've had cats who purred when they were in pain. OR she might be purring for her kittens. Like WELCOME TO THE WORLD babies!

Cats often purr to comfort themselves when they are in pain or scared.
