Parents aren't teaching their kids anything except how to be fat, rude, lazy bastards.

The importance of a strong work ethic is not stressed enough to young people today. Just observe how most teens who wait on you at a store barely acknowledge you or are rude. Look at how many teen slackers there are and how many of them don't show for work, call in sick, etc. I think that parents today need to teach more responsibility and the value of a good work ethic as being an attractive quality to have when one reaches adulthood.

Manners! We people of Southern heritage like to call it "home training". Our young people are severely lacking in the use of words like please and thank you. It is rare that you see a young person get up and give his chair to an older person in a doctor's office waiting room, for instance. I rarely hear a yes sir or no sir anymore either. I was always told that you might not be the smartest or the prettiest, but there is never an excuse for rude behavior.
Besides the whole manners issue, I surely wish some parents would teach their sons to PULL UP YOUR PANTS!. Underwear is worn UNDER your clothes - hence the word under, and a baseball cap is not worn backwards unless you are the catcher on a baseball team.
Offensive is having to view someones underwear sticking out everywhere and then still having to see the crack of their backside! PLEASE!

YOU GO DAD! I agree! to many kids are jumping into the dating circle now a days. Everyone of has a significant other when none of em' should. Like 16 and up is understandable, but kids should be taught to live their childhood as children. I don't entirely blame parents though. The media and t.v, internet, and magazines are all about this stuff.

Parents need to have an open and frank discussion about sex. And not to just say don't do it but to give facts and tell them you hope they don't but if they do they need contraceptives and protection against diseases. If abstinance only was working we wouldn't have so many teen moms and disease rates would be dropping.
Parents also need to teach their kids RESPONSIBILITY....no tv did not make you do that. You did it.
And the manners should be a given. Though I cannot tell you how many times an elderly person has shoved right by me without saying anything. I always say excuse you for them though.

Personal responsibility and manners.
In reading all the previous answers, I had to chuckle. See, I homeschool my kids, and people are forever asking me how I expect them to learn social skills and how to act in the "real world" if I don't send them to school.
Yet everyone here seems to think that the schools do a lousy job at teaching social skills and proper behavior, and that those things should be the parents' job.
Thanks to all for reinforcing what I already believe.... that they are *MY* children, and they don't belong to the state!

I don't think its only parents, but an entire society, that are not teaching children to accept responsibility for their actions.
People always blame their situation on environment or upbringing. I can't succeed because I am not the right "color" or I do drugs because "I was abused."
Come on, we are all in control of our own actions. We have got to stop blaming everyone else for what we do with our own lives.

Manners, respect, social skills and they certainly aren't watching them when they are on the damn computer. Responsibility is another one. The teachers aren't teaching anymore either. The language skills of todays youth is down the toilet.

Responsibility, Respect, and the value of a dollar. Kids are used to getting what they want. They need to learn to earn it.

To consider others before yourself and to take it on the chin. There are tons of other things that children aren't learning, but if a child has consideration for others, he will have manners, respect, kindness, generosity, etc. If he can take it on the chin, he will be able to survive life when it is unfair, he'll be able to deal with hardship, he won't be a whiner or a tattle tale, he'll be able to face the consequences of his actions, he'll take responsibility for himself, he'll understand that he will be held accountable for himself, he won't expect his parents to bail him out of trouble he gets himself into, etc.
