My ma and pops lost their cat some years ago and buried it in the garden along with a plant. The headstone is home made and painted which does fade with the weather condition but they like to re do it from time to time to keep the memory of the cat going and the plant is doing realy well,

Why not do away with the headstone idea all together? In my opinion a headstone is quite a morbid thing - does it give and reinforce the right ideas to the kids? Perhaps it would be better to plant a shrub or tree over your poor Kitty's grave so that both you and the kids have something positive that is growing to focus on. I once planted a small flowering shrub with my dad over our pet dogs grave - I still go down the garden and pause for thought even now and I know that I would much rather be looking at a beautiful flowering plant than a lifeless stone - so would the children and you - even though you may not have realised that yet.

Look at Lowes and Home depot, both have custom numbers and words for you home, like next to your front door.
They can be put on tile, stone, etc.
I am sure you could easily have one of those made up as a headstone and it would be carved into the stone, not just painted on.
Otherwise look for outdoor enamal paint from a hobby store. Sealing the rock in varnish afterwards will also help protect the paint.

I am sorry to here that. It is very hard to lose a Pet as they really are part of the family. When we lost our Beautiful little Cat to Cancer recently we buried her in the garden and used a lovely rock as a headstone and painted her name and date of death on it. If a rock is no good, use a piece of lacquered wood.We also brought some windchimes, candles and fairies to make a feature. The pain does get better in time.

Have you checked with your local laws? A lot of counties don't allow animal burial in your yard. In city limits anyway. It decomposes and can contaminate the water. If you are in the country, make sure you bury it far away from your water supply. As for the granite stone you have, take it to an etcher. Have it etched on, like they do trophies.

most pet stores actually have headstones for pets that you can choose and some will let you special order them just ask we have had 2 pets pass away and we have headstones for both of them bring your kids with you to pick it out it is a sad thing and it will make them feel better to have a say in it no matter what their age and if need be explain to them why they will have to wait a few days for it so they wont be too upset that they may not get it that same day. so sorry for your loss.

maybe if you know anyone who is artistic, and if you could provide some oil-based paint and some ideas for what you want on it, you could have them do the painting for you?? I don't have any experience in headstones, although I have buried a few precious and well-loved cats. Sorry for your loss.

Well, my guinea pig died and i wanted a gravestone too. What I did was I went down to the craft store and bought a decorative stone kit. It has cement mix and letters in it. Also it has colored pieces of glass that make for a nice bright addition.

I think that's sweet! You might check places that sell headstones. They might could engrave something for you. When one of my cats died, I bought a tombstone type thing and bought stickers for the name and dates, but after it rained, they came off as did permanent marker.

Buy a stepping stone kit from a craft store (the cement kind) and let the kids help make it. It can be more meaningful for them that way. I am sorry for the loss of your pet. I know it is hard, esp. with kids, too.
