Kids for the most part should not be on a "diet." Instead, you should encourage them to make smart, healthy food choices while eating well balanced meals. Encourage lots of fruits, veggies, and not a lot of foods high in fat or sugar. Kids should get their fruit through whole fruits as much as possible because many fruit juices are high in sugar. You should also encourage them to stay active, at least an hour per day.
