Why do people named William go by Bill instead of Will? It's just one letter?

It is quite simple, here is the way it works. If you go by Will you end up being called Wee Willy, Which I need not bring to your attention it sounds a bit wimpy. On the other hand if you go by Bill you will be called Big Bill , this leaves people wondering just what is big about Big Bill.As you can tell they both insinuate the size of their winky, so would you rather be Wee Willy or Big Bill?

i don't know---i mean all tha people that i know with the name of William just call themselves William or Will or Willie. i have neva heard of a guy named william calling themselves Bill for William.

I dont know its weird though.I mean i have an uncle named Richard and everyone calls him dick!..It always seemed funny to me til later my mom explained its a name they use for short?. I never got that...Oh well, I would rather be called my full name if that was the case....ya know?
Its probably a word association by origin i think.

Not all of them do. Some go by Will. Example-Pirates of the Caribbean...

But in any case, Bill-not sure why that part is. Hopefully someone else does.

Because "will" means so many other things and the meaning can be misconstrued.

Bill just means a paper certificate.

Bill is a much more common name, and I think it sounds better than will. Will sounds like you are going to die...
