great question! i think his strength would be to keep his mind stayed on God, on his faith in God that no matter what happens God will not allow anything to happen that He wont give him the strength to walk through....and to know that he is never alone...never. -kat

In some cases there are mental breakdowns in battle, know as shell shock. However my experience (Viet Nam War Era), has been the need to help your fellow soldier, which produces an incrediable mental strength. When you are in battle your not fighting for your country or your loved ones, but for your fellow soldier. There is also a simple statement that is given to you during basic training, and it's simple and to the point. "Kill or be killed", which is a very true but a brutal statement. And fear is also a great motivater.

Will-power,
Determination and courage. - to the war thing

But I believe mans greatest mental strength is either
1. Common Sense
2. Imagination
3. The power to love
and 4. Logic to a certian degree - Not so logical that you become very annoying with your logical questions and thoughts, you know what I mean

Theres more but I cant think of it.

And when I say man I mean Men and Women.

Thats just my opinion :)

Perhaps in that instance, the knowledge that he or she has a family and people who love him or her would encourage the soldier to carry on. I don't know that this is the greatest mental strength, though.
