well, I need more info - how long is a while? what kind of budget? and what are you looking for? The big plus is that there are thai people most eveyrwhere you go.. Beaches to the south - Bkk wild and crazy fun.. and how old are you? - Up north is more backpacker youth and maybe a more intellectual group of travelers.. Issan and central plains are a bit less traveled and more uniquely Thai - or you can go further afield Loeii, Petchaboon, Nan provinces - - if you give me some more info, I can answer this better - you are welcome to contact me..

Chiangmai is a nice province to stay unless you prefer lots of seafood. The food is less spicy but still very spicy for those foreigners. The weather is cooler and people are friendly. There are lots to do including visiting Chiangrai by bus. I think you can even go visit Laos.

You can stay at Koh Samui if you are looking for nice beaches, if you are after some nightlife and shopping, the best place to be is in Bangkok.

You can try beach areas in Phuket or the mountains in Chiangmai. You can get pretty low rates for long term stay if you look up guesthouses in these areas. So up to you to choose a location first.

Don't believe those replies...
If you need some technology stay in BKK and go to the beach whenever you want (1 hour by plane to any island or 2 hours by car to pattaya...)
If you want to be on island you should be on phuket or samui.

it's overall a very nice country to relax. depends upon ur interests, though.
south, closer to Malaysia border is stunningly beautiful, but now it's very dangerous to travel there - a lot of muslim conflicts, bomb blasts and all...
don't go to popular tourist spots like Pattaya - u'll get disappointed, it's become spoilt completely.
