As a teacher of twelve year olds, it is refreshing to see that you take an interest in your child's well-being. Saying that, I think a relatively late bedtime is ok for summer. Midnight would be reasonable, unless, of course, he has to be up the next morning for something like church, etc. And, if you notice he's sluggish or sleepy, you can always modify it. But, you need to tell him, if you decide to make it later, the deal...he needs to be rested and awake and ready during the day.

I also agree 11:00 11:30 the 12 year old had to get up early during the school year is on vacation now, why not increase the the time to then plus is at home you know where the 12 year old is, I would be frighten of not having a bed time too many are tempted to sneak at durning the night... I know I did.

During school time, they get up so early, and have so much stress. Summer is time to cut lose. Let em stay up late, and sleep in. Sometimes being lazy and getting a break is good. Just remember that a week before break is over, to start back with the strict rules of bedtime, so they get conditioned before school starts back. If they are not hurting anyone, let em have a bit of freedom. The routine will be back before you know it. Let em enjoy being a kid.
If they work hard during the year. I let em play hard during the summer.

11 is a good bedtime. When I was growing up that was my bedtime, unless I had friends over for the night on weekends, then I could stay up until 12.

I think 10pm is completely reasonable for a 12 year old. Although, I don't think it would hurt to allow him to stay up an hour or two later on Friday and Saturday evenings. This will be sort of like a comprimise, and give him something to look forward to during the week.

Bedtime should happen once it gets dark outside. 10pm is pretty late. Friends have nothing to do with discipline. The telephone use should stop at 8. Video Games and other active activities should stop by 9.

Ask him to make a suggestion as to what he thinks is reasonable and then debate with him to reach a compromise. Or you could let him stay up as late as he would like, then wake him up at 9am everyday. Eventually the sleepyness will get to him and he will chose an approprate bedtime.
