A soldier is kidnapped, so they roll in with tanks and bomb a powerstation crippling the lives of thousands of civilians that had nothing to do with the skirmish. What gives them the right?

Still today they continue to press their attack.

Like I said, now more than 800,000 people have no electricity. The Israeli attack on the central substation’s transformer was precisely devastating -- repairs are expected to take several months. For most, no power means no water.

I can understand the use of force against specific militant targets and the colateral damage caused from that, but crippling almost a million people's power and water supply for months? ... THAT IS HEAVY HANDED. If you can't see it you have a serious problem.

It seems like in most of the people's minds who answered the question, they seem to ignore the plight of everyday Palestinians and just lump them into this big pot of "those who want to destroy Isreal". Such a simple minded mentality you have. Don't you think there are regular people just wanting to go about their day and feed their families and cloth their children in there too? Or do they all just sit there daily planning attacks against Isreal?

Give me a break.

Oh and to the guy who said this:
"If we had half the backbone they have, Iran, Syria, and North Korea would have been obliterated years ago for their support of terror, hatred of human rights, and pursuit of nuclear weapons."

You're the idiot of the scariest type. You want to just wipe these countries off the face of the map ("obliterate") so you don't have to worry about them anymore. Where will you put all your pent up angst once we have destroyed every country that is threatening to you? Maybe you'll get more serious about the beatings you give your wife every night... make sure she stays in line too.

Maybe the question to be asked is why are the palestinians so stupid that they keep pulling the tigers tail. simple answer is...when they say something they mean it...it isn't up for negotiation. What right did palestinians have to go to the israeli side and kidnap their soldier? Did you ever hear the definition of a fool as "someone who keeps repeating the same action expecting a different result each time?"

What gives them the right?

Let us look at some of the possible what!
-pass experience with those who do kiddnapp their kids!
the multiple bombs that goes off without notice, or specific reason!
-For all the stopped past attacked, prevented by the Israelis, and many don't hear about them!
-for all the kids, old and young people that have been killed by the exterimeist Palestinian and their supporters!
-for the constant threat that they will be taken hostage or just killed on the spot!

Why are they heavy handed?
Because there are people who all they want is to kick them out of their homes, and take their lives and their homes, whichever comes first, and because of that those who don't want to harm the Israelis, and want to live with them, pay the price because of their own people don't want peace with the Israelis. Neither one of them innocent and neither one of them is not paying dearly for what they think is rightly theirs, a HOME.

they remember the holocaust and understand the best way to deter attacks is by showing a willingness to flex their muscle at the first sign of trouble. If we had half the backbone they have, Iran, Syria, and North Korea would have been obliterated years ago for their support of terror, hatred of human rights, and pursuit of nuclear weapons.

What happens if you pick on someone who can kick your but? You get beat down. Well that's just what is happening here. The Palestinians should just shut the hell up and quit doing things that get them beat up. Israel pulls out and Palestinians terrorize them the first chance they get. What would you do in that case just let them murder your citizens with cowardly suicide attacks.

Heavyhanded? That's how conflicts are won. You go in with all the power at hand, to end the conflict quickly, with minimal loss on your side. You don't win by taking it easy on the enemy.

Israelis are outnumbered a thousand to one. They can't afford to appear weak.

I'll bet the Islamo-Fascists are regretting kidnapping those Israeli citizens!

Perhaps because they are surrounded and outnumbered by their sworn enemies? Enemies who hate their very existance, and have sworn to destroy them. Simply looking at a map makes it obvious why they do not show any weakness or hesitation to defend themselves, nor to strike back if attacked. Their very survival requires it.

Because they have the backing of the U.S. government, which doesn't give the same value to the lives of the innocent people who are killed in Pakistan as they do the lives of the people in Israel. It's religion.
