I think rain gives a lot of life to things that are otherwise dormant. Just like plants need water to grow, I think spores and bacteria get jump started when it's moist.

I find it worse before a rain, esp. after a long dry spell. The rain helps to wash away the pollen that has been released and is just floating around, settlign on stuff, and getting stirred up in the dry air.

The rain can stir up stuff and there is a lot more mold after it rains.
